We often paddle to Skomer or Skokholm islands as part of this trip but like to keep the trip “open plan” so we can pick the best destinations based on the actual weather at the time. Rest assured we will find the best beauty and paddling spots across St Brides Bay to Freshwater East. This is also a great time of year to see wildlife including Atlantic Grey Seals and porpoises.
This trip is suitable for someone who has kayaked a bit before, practiced a capsize drill, and wants to progress in their sea kayaking skills and knowledge. As well as developing our boat and paddle skills we will also look at the theory of trip planning understanding the impact of tides and weather on our routes.
The first day will be a warm up day, looking at improving your sea paddling skills, boat handling and basic trip planning (weather, tides and tidal streams etc). On the second day we’ll do a slightly longer paddle possibly venturing a little further off shore. All the routes we use offer great scenery and lots of interesting marine life, and alternatives if the wind is strong.
This weekend can be used as training towards British canoeing’s Sea Kayak Award and Coastal Sea Kayak Award.
if you have the relevant previous experience and you also wish to be assessed for the awards please let us know well in advance as we must register assessments in advance with British Canoeing. Then you can be assessed throughout the weekend. Or just come to enjoy a weekend of fun sea kayak training!
This course is non-residential and we can recommend lots of great places to stay from camping (West Hook Farm) to hot tub luxury at Musslewick Farm
This course is for you if: You have good flat water kayaking skills, and are happy capsizing and would like to push yourself to the next level. It’s especially for those who feel “the pull of the sea” – the desire for fresh, sea air and the fun adventure of being guided along rugged coastlines that meet the mighty sea. If you aren’t sure just give us a call for a chat.
